ALKAWTHAR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS
Service as an action is a fundamental component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). It seeks to develop selfless members of the community who work to improve the lives of others and their environment. Service as Action asks students to become involved in the life of the local community through community projects or personal projects and provides opportunities for students to explore, design, implement, and reflect on their efforts to positively impact their local environment. Through their service-as-action experiences, students discover the importance of participating in the community and gain a better understanding of the issues faced by their immediate surroundings.
Action learning to address a real community need is most meaningful when it allows students to undertake initiatives that involve their interests, skills and talents. Subsequently, through their reflection on the service activity they have undertaken, students will gain a better understanding of the community and world in which they live, and the role they can play in improving their own lives and the lives of others, and the responsibilities that come with it.
Students will demonstrate throughout the 5-year program that they have been able to undertake service actions with others, learn about important issues, inform others, engage in advocacy, organize and carry out actions individually and collectively.
